I installed the Bosch gauge in the center stack below the radio as my Subaru Forester dash did not have room for a tidy installation. This location still provided good site lines while driving and a slightly easier installation.

Subaru has several plugs that seal the firewall and allow passage of the gauge sensor to the area at the rear of the engine.

May 13, I did try to calibrate my temperature sender with my son yesterday night. Thermometer had it’s own accuracy 1C in the range C and 2C outside of this range. Measurements with water gave smooth results, but needed a patience, since sender had some inertia. Measurements with sand are complete nightmare. I doubt guidelines in Service Manual are going to work as described, since temperature in close spots in sand less then a centimeter apart could differ to 15C or so.

We ended up with placing thermometer tip in position it touches sender tip. For those, who keep boat on water during winter and uses heater, it would be interesting to see low temperature range values. Freeze damage is possible when resistance values go above 1.

Temperature gauge goes up and down from 90 to , completely randomly sometimes it doesn’t happen and sometimes it does, no difference if i drive , or stand at a traffic light , or drive smooth or hit the road hard. My car is an aud s6 model 5. Than problem occured after i had a blown gasket due to a malfunction of my thermostat couple of month ago. Gasket has been replaced at that time but after hundred km without any issue , i am facing this constant problem of the temperature gauge going crazy and for whatever reason it comes from 90 steady up to in about 30 to 40 seconds and then it comes back down while im still driving, and then all the cycle again , up and down up and down , sometimes more than and soemtimes less.

The engine is not over hitting , coolant is not boiling ,cooling system pipes are not hard and can be pressed bare hands. The system has been already bleed properly and filled back with a special vacuum to avoid any air in the system. Cylinder head have been checked by pressure test and have shown a perfect health condition , no cracks no damages. Cylinders have been checked the same way and are also in perfect condition , there is no air lick and no crossover in the system from the cylinder to the cooling.

The only thing we are thinking about now is maybe the wiring system. As well please note that this problem has happen just after i had a severe overheating above degrees due to the thermostat that was not working and which caused my fans to not properly cool my engine at a certain point and consequently overhitted the full engine cooland boiling After than incident we were not aware that the gasket was blown and we just changed the thermostat.

At that point the car was doing that up and down with the temperature gauge , so we replaced it ,.. Result after km , the shit happened again. Temp Gauge is going up and down again. Do you guys have any clue of what the fk is happening to my car?

Since that one is sort of a final waring you may be fine without the other coolant one because you will still have that light to warn you to pay attention to the gauge. There is also a second hole in the same passage on the front of the block a few inches to the right as you stand in front of the engine. In a 73 that is a thermal vacuum switch for some sort of emissions thing cant remember what and too lazy to get the book to check.

If that is not there or working on yours you can put the temp sender there. Temp senders need to be in the flow to give good readings so T’s dont tend to work as well. There is also a sensor in the front corner of the pass head behind the alternator, this one looks just like the rear one but turns on at a different temp to tell the climate control that the engine is warm enough to turn on the blower for heat modes. In this last picture you can see the mechanical gauge sender gold between the radiator hose and dizzy.

On the other side of the dizzy you can see a bit of red and black wire with a piece of white tape, this is my sender for my fuel injection computer. My car is a convert so getting the AC to work just has not been a priority.
